A Local Guide to Ann Arbor Running

Last weekend, I met a couple at Lillie parkrun that recently moved to Ann Arbor. This was their first foray into the local scene, and they were eager to meet some local runners.

Remembering how challenging it can be to find the right crew when you’re new in town, I promised to make things a little easier for my new pals…

Here is your local guide to Ann Arbor running.

ANN ARBOR TRACK CLUB

EMU-group-photo.jpg

ROLE IN THE ECOSYSTEM:

Founded in 1968, AATC is the O.G. of Ann Arbor running clubs. Known for meticulously organized races and no nonsense track workouts, there is a reason AATC has made it over 50 years.

In addition to their weekly workouts, AATC hosts a few “can’t miss” events for local runners. The Dexter Ann Arbor Run is Michigan’s largest point-to-point half marathon, and has been running for 40 years. Clash of the Clubs is a battle royale track meet hosted by AATC.

Where does the revenue go? AATC membership dues provide substantial travel funding and coaching for their Youth team, and AATC provides FOUR college scholarships every year!

PR RUN CLUB

townie pic.jpg

ROLE IN THE ECOSYSTEM:

The name of the club says it all. PR Run Club is where runners go to get fast. This can scare off some less speedy runners, but the great irony is that most PR regulars got that way by continuing to show up to the group workouts.

Why do runners start qualifying for Boston when they join PR? Weekly runs are tailor made for marathon training, and their group leaders share all their secrets with newbies. Plus, they go out for beers every Tuesday at Grizzly Peak.

ANN-HUA RUNNERS

64312272_10220170177304491_5101517954680356864_n.jpg

ROLE IN THE ECOSYSTEM:

Before we get in to the legendary origin story of Ann-Hua Runners, here’s the Wiki entry on the school behind the club.

Ann-Hua Chinese School is a non-profit, parents-sponsored, voluntary association whose missions are:

  1. to teach Chinese language (mandarin),

  2. to promote the understanding of the Chinese culture, and

  3. to provide a network of support among individuals sharing the common interest in Chinese ethnic and cultural heritage.

So, here’s what happened…

Every Sunday, a few parents would drop off their kids, then hit the B2B trail for a few miles while their children became smarter humans. Because running is contagious, the group continued to grow, and is now one of Ann Arbor’s biggest and most enthusiastic pack of runners.
