State of the Race:

Conventional wisdom says that a race should be finished planning three weeks before the big day. How are we looking? Not quite 100% there yet, but we have 29 days till race night. Here’s a quick “State of the Race.”

Final Decisions

This always takes longer to figure out than you think, but… we’re pretty stoked about our final choices.

Liquor License

As you might expect, there are an insane amount of hoops to jump through when it comes to securing a special event liquor license. Fortunately, we are nearing the finish line, and are now waiting on the final approval from the state of Michigan. With any luck, we will have our official permit in about two weeks.

Our good friend, Mike Nix, owner of Ypsilanti Running Co. has signed on as lead bartender. He will be pouring ice cold lagers and IPAs for thirsty runners immediately following the Team Relay and 5K.

Volunteers

We have 27 selfless folks committed to helping out, but we’re still about 20 short. Why does it take a village to put on a race? Take a look at this Google Doc and you’ll understand what happens behind the scenes of a race: https://docs.google.com/document/d/19zMMXFrm-6Ijj-iwcthWDitye4t4eqhQtmqjI1G8AdU/edit

The Final Registration Push

Having access to last year’s data has been a real luxury. Seeing our #’s trending ahead of last year’s by every metric has had a calming effect, but the final month is hard to predict. With a month to go last year, registrations caught fire, and we hit our cap about 48 hours before race day.

Currently, we are 70 registrations ahead of last year’s pace, but are experiencing a relatively soft start to August. Relay participation is way up, with over 30 families slated to run together.

In a perfect world, we will cap the field at 600, and hit our ceiling by the end of August. That will give us 6 days to really fine tune the final planning, and focus solely on the race experience.

So do us a favor…sign up already, would ya?
